Get A First Look At Joaquin Phoenix And Rooney Mara In Mary Magdalene
For almost as long as movies have been made, biblical epics have been among them. The latest follows the story of Mary Magdalene, Jesus Christ’s wife, and it stars Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara in the titular role.
Mary Magdalene is directed by Garth Davis, the man who brought us the Oscar-nominated film Lion in 2016. Not only does it star Mara, but Joaquin Phoenix plays Jesus, and 12 Years a Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter. The film itself is being pushed as “the untold story of Mary Magdalene,” which in itself is saying a lot considering not much is known about her.
The official synopsis of the movies reads as follows. Set in the Holy Land in the first century C.E., a young woman leaves her small fishing village and traditional family behind to join a radical new social movement. At its head is a charismatic leader, Jesus of Nazareth, who promises that the world is changing. Mary is searching for a new way of living, and an authenticity that is denied her by the rigid hierarchies of the day. As the notoriety of the group spread and more are drawn to follow Jesus’ inspirational message, Mary’s spiritual journey places her at the heart of a story that will lead to the capital city of Jerusalem, where she must confront the reality of Jesus’ destiny and her own place within it.
Mary Magdalene is scheduled to come out in March of 2018.
